Which NASCAR Manufacturer Has The Edge At Phoenix Raceway?

Which NASCAR Manufacturer Has The Edge At Phoenix Raceway?
Fact Checked by Michael Peters

Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race is at Phoenix Raceway, which isn’t a place for upsets — something to keep in mind for customers at Arizona sportsbook apps this weekend.

Over 20 Cup Series races in the past 10 years at the 1-mile oval in Avondale, only six teams have visited Victory Lane. And after the first race in that span, won by Carl Edwards of Roush Fenway Racing in spring 2013, that list is down to five powerhouse car owners to celebrate victory at Phoenix: Richard Childress, Stewart Haas, Rick Hendrick, Roger Penske and Joe Gibbs.

The competition among manufacturers has been fairly even, with Chevrolet winning nine of the past 20 Phoenix races to lead the way. Ford has won six, and Toyota has captured five victories since 2013. That makes Phoenix a wide-open proposition for Arizona sports betting, reflected in the fact several drivers are lumped close together on the odds board, with the order changing depending on where you look.

NASCAR Trends To Watch At Phoenix Raceway

The close competition among teams and manufacturers is reflected in the odds for Arizona sports betting on Sunday’s United Rentals Work United 500 NASCAR Cup race at Phoenix.

At BetMGM Arizona Sportsbook, Penske Racing teammates Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney are co-favorites at +800 odds as of Wednesday morning.

Ford swept both Phoenix races in 2022, with Chase Briscoe winning for Stewart Haas Racing in the spring race and Logano taking both the season finale and the series championship in November.

That was the first time Ford had won both events in one season since NASCAR’s top series began competing in the desert twice annually in 2005. The Blue Oval hadn’t even won consecutive races there since capturing three in a row from 2000-02.

At Caesars Sportsbook Arizona, Logano is favored at +800, followed by Blaney and Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson (Chevrolet) at +850. Three drivers are at +900 — Kyle Busch of Richard Childress Racing (Chevrolet) and teammates Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell, both driving Toyotas for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Can Kevin Harvick Conquer Phoenix One Last Time?

Kevin Harvick has been the dominant driver in this 10-year span with six victories, including four in a row from the fall 2013 race to the spring 2015 event. His nine victories at Phoenix are by far the career record on the flat, 1-mile oval, and his most at any track, but his most recent visit to Victory Lane there came in 2018.

DraftKings Arizona Sportsbook lists Harvick as a +1200 shot to win Sunday’s race, though a tastier prop might be his +170 odds for a top-five finish, which he has achieved 13 times in the past 20 Phoenix races.

Harvick, who is retiring at the end of this season, won in 2013 for Richard Childress, then swept the two Phoenix races in 2014 for his new team, Stewart Haas, on his way to the series championship. Harvick accounts for five of the nine Chevy wins in the past decade (the most recent one came after SHR switched to Ford power).

Toyota can mostly thank Joe Gibbs’ team for its competitiveness at Phoenix. Busch (twice), Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr. have all won there since 2017, though it’s worth noting that Busch now drives a Chevy for Childress.
